Description

A 55 km western Sydney circuit taking in Chipping Norton Lakes and Prospect Reservoir following many pleasant paths alongside rivers, creeks, canals and aqueducts – may even travel a rail trail. The ride is predominantly through a variety of parklands and reserves.

The route: Almost all on (good quality) shared cycleways plus some short sections on usually quiet local roads. It is a predominantly flat, low stress ride but there are a number of short hills along the way.

The ride starts out through Lake Gillawarna parklands beside Prospect Creek, Georges River and part of Chipping Norton Lake before heading to Canley Vale and up Orphan School Creek. We travel from Calmsley Hill Farm through Western Sydney Regional Park to Prospect Reservoir.

Leaving Prospect Reservoir, we will travel beside, in & over the old 1888 aqueduct including the historic Boothtown Victorian Romanesque style water bridge. Boothtown Aqueduct - Wikipedia We then drop down to the upper Prospect Creek back to Fairfield and ‘home’.

Start/Finish: Meet at Garrison Point Reserve, Georges Hall. It is on your left as you drive north along Henry Lawson Drive, after passing Bankstown Airport; the exit off Henry Lawson Drive is signposted. Park nearby the large toilet block. There is no rail station or shops nearby.

Times: Meet at 8:15 am for an 8:30 start. We should be back mid-afternoon, say by 2:30 pm, allowing for a few stops along the way.

Food: Coffee, snacks, food available at about 20 km. Intending to stop at Prospect Reservoir picnic area for lunch, to look around and have a break, about 34 km – need to bring your own food as there are no food outlets here; toilets and water available. We will not be conveniently passing many shops along the way so bring your own snacks etc.

Note: Ride pace will be moderate but anyone joining the ride must be comfortable with the distance, a number of short hills, some on-road riding and being out for a number of hours; not suitable for inexperienced riders. Any type of bike in good order is suitable; helmet, water bottle, spare tube and relevant tools, pump etc required.

Contact: Terry Hatton before ride if you wish to come along.
