Description

This ride is at the hard end of the med-hard range. This ride starts out by climbing the steepest sections before a 50km generally flat and downhill section to Manly. The return up the North Shore is a gradual climb to Chatswood before dropping down again and climbing back to the M2. The latter part of the ride will test the endurance of most riders. Monitoring your hydration and energy levels will ensure you get most enjoyment.

This ride starts on the east side of Eastwood Station. It climbs up to the Pacific Highway at Turramurra via Brown's waterhole before winding its way through the back streets of Turramurra to Mona Vale road. Along Mona Vale Road through St Ives and Terry Hills and into Ku-ring-gai National Park. Down the hill to Church Point and on to the coast at Mona Vale. The ride then follows the coast and beaches down to Manly for a well deserved coffee stop.

After coffee it's on to the ferry for a relaxing ride to the Quay before riding over the bridge and onto the North Shore cyclepaths to Chatswood. At Chatswood we turn west and down the hill into the Lane Cove River Park for a quiet amble along the river to the M2. On to the M2 for a quick sprint to the Browns Waterhole exit. From there it is mostly downhill back to the start at Eastwood.

If you find the going hard, some alternative end points could be at the Quay or Chatswood with a train back to the start (check for trackwork though).

We aim to average about 24km/hr for the entire 78km distance. Total elapsed time is about 5 hours including regrouping, ferry trip and coffee stop.

This ride is suitable for strong riders on road bikes or lighter flat bar bikes setup for fast road travelling. Two water bottles and snacks are strongly recommended. Confidence in riding with traffic is essential as sections of this ride are along main roads, some of which have no cycle facilities. Competency in puncture repair is required as regroups are far apart.

Notes: Starts Epping Station. Will ride back from Manly to Epping, however an option will be provided for people to leave at Manly (Ferry) to the city, or at select alternate stations/metro. This additional riding will increase the distance to be closer to 90km, Riders are to be able to maintain a brisk pace on average, and be extended hill fit. Ride average speed may finish toward the lower side of brisk.
