This ride commences with some highway shoulder and 2X2 lane riding to Waterfall where we drop into the Royal National Park for the ride to Stanwell Tops for the great view down the coast. From here we take Lawrence Hargrave Drive which descends and then undulates along the coast to Thirroul, including the Seacliff Bridge. Riders must be confident descenders. From Thirroul we use the Coastal Bike Path and local streets to Wollongong. Minimal regroups, which allows riders to travel at their own pace for significant sections of the ride after Waterfall. Drink stops are taken at Waterfall and Thirroul with a toilet stop at Stanwell Tops. Bale out points include Waterfall, Otford and various points to Wollongong, as we follow the main Illawarra rail line. The National Park is best ridden on week-days when traffic is minimal. The return to Sutherland uses express rail services, which stop at Coniston. This station provides safer access than Wollongong Station and gets riders on the train before the more popular Wollongong Station. If you are looking for a casual scenic experience of the area they should consider one of the many other options on Bike North’s calendar, such as those starting from Thirroul.

Notes: This ride covers the last 60km of The Gong Ride and a segment of the UCI World Championships course. The weather appears favourable with afternoon showers, well after we finish.Pace is brisk as we have a fast, easy section to start and some good descents. Possibly average 24kph but there are some own pace segments. We'll catch the 11:35am train from Coniston to Sutherland.
