Description

This ride  will take you into the precinct of the Chiltern - Mt Pilot National Park. We will be using well formed gravel roads and the odd (but rideable) bush track. However, be warned as there are occasional sections with some sharpish gravel along with some sticks and twigs that need to be negotiated but there are almost no corrugations. Please make sure you bring along a spare tube, tools and a drinking water.

We'll start in Chiltern at the swimming pool carpark and head south under the freeway before taking a hard left onto the Chiltern-Yackandanda Road. At Lancashire Gap Road we'll turn right and follow  it until we reach Cyanide Road where the gravel begins.

About a kilometre further along, we'll stop at the Honeyeater Picnic area which is a popular location for bird watchers. We'll continue with a slow ascent on Cyanide Road before turning onto Ballarat Road for a long gentle downhill run back towards the freeway. After a short section of bitumen road, we'll go under the freeway and enter another section of the National Park.

Battery Hill Road will lead us to the old Magenta Mine and its picnic area. We then follow Magenta Road and then Green Hills Road for a steady climb until we reach Riley's Road. At this point we will take the Grevillea Track (1.5km) which is well formed, but there are some wash aways along the edge and there a few more sticks and depressions to encounter on occasions across the track. Single file is the way to go, but it is a gentle downhill slope so you only need to worry about watching the road. This track is included into the ride to show what you may encounter if you ever choose to ride the many kilometres of other tracks criss/crossing the Park.

We'll start heading home by following Ryan's Road (easterly/southerly direction) and then swing onto Riley's Road (westerly direction for 3km). The last part of the ride into Chiltern will be on the sealed Chiltern-Howlong Road. However, if you're still seeking adventure there is a more torturous (but relatively flat) route back into town along the Stringybark Track / Magenta Road / Brick Kiln Road. If there is full consensus, we may all head back along this route.

Coffee at the Chiltern Bakery and Cafe.
