Description

Riders leave Sydney Harbour, through Darling Harbour, George St Cycleway, Zetland, past the Australian Golf Course, and on towards Botany. Once at Botany, the ride enters the shared paths through Sir Joseph Banks Park till it reaches the Foreshore.

From the foreshore, riders gain a direct view to an active runway of Sydney Airport, at that point where planes wheels leave the runway. Riders also view the massive operations of a container port, loading and unloading containers from ships. There is also an optional visit to a protected bird sanctuary with a private, large circular viewing deck.

Once back in the park itself, riders are able to view large animal sculptures.

On return, the ride passes through Kingsford, turning back to Gadigal Ave and Bourke St, before heading through the Domain and finally back to Milsons Point.

Allow for 4 – 4.5 hrs hours including ride briefing, regroups, coffee, and viewing point at a Steady 17 – 19 kmh pace.

The ride uses a range of shared paths and cycleways, local roads, and slightly busier roads. Riders also need to be comfortable cycling on the road/road shoulder with traffic. A ride leader may alternately choose to ride on available shared paths and cycleways, or on the road nearby.

Riders are to have geared road bikes due to the hilly nature of some ride sections.

Route hazards include on road/path items such as bollards, sticks etc. Riders to be particularly careful on shared paths with pedestrians and dogs that may unexpectedly move in front of the rider.

There are water fountains and toilets on route.

The ride does pass near or through several railway stations and light rail stations which would provide options for riders to leave the ride. Check how trackwork might impact these options. Optionally riders could turn around at any point and retrace the route, but please let the ride leader know BEFORE you leave the ride

Notes: Pre-registration is required. In the event of poor weather, the ride may be cancelled, please check the Bike North website.
