Description

Leaving Sydney Harbour, the ride passes through the inner city toward the East including a visit to Centennial Park, past the greens of Randwick Racecourse and the University of NSW to our historic destination – La Perouse. Also known as “La Pa” or “LaPa” by locals.

Wikipedia.org informs us that La Perouse was named after the French navigator Jean-François de Galaup, comte de Lapérouse (1741–88), who landed on the northern shore of Botany Bay west of Bare Island on 26 January 1788. Captain Arthur Phillip and the first fleet of convicts had arrived in Botany Bay a few days earlier.

Prior to this landing, Wikipedia.org informs us La Perouse was known as "Gooriwal" to the Muruora-dial people of the area. The Gameygal or Kameygal clan of the Dharawal people probably lived between the mouth of the Cooks River and present-day La Perouse, including the La Perouse area.

After visiting historic La Perouse, the ride will pass through Yarra Bay and head south briefly to Molineaux Point before turning around. It will then use a series of back streets before retracing the original route returning to Sydney Harbour.

Special note to the ride leader:
The base ride has been designed to depart from the city in off peak travel times such as in the morning of weekend days and public holidays.
Alternative options are available for the ride leader to consider if they leave the city at other times. E.g.
1. Use the Sydney Domain, Cathedral St, and Bourke St cycleway return route both directions (instead of Oxford St)
2. Use the Bunnerong Rd Chifley to Byrd Ave Kingsford back road return route both directions (instead of Anzac Parade).
3. UNSW, Norton Lane and Botany Lane Kensington as an alternative to Botany St.

Riders are encouraged to bring a secure lock for their bike.

There are selected convenient early exit points (train or light rail stations) available nearby the route. Additionally, riders can turn around at any point and retrace the route. If a rider leaves the ride, they should let the ride leader or sweep know BEFORE leaving the ride, ensuring the person acknowledges they were heard!

Notes: Pre-registration is required. Please bring a Snack in case Cafes are not available this Easter Monday. In the event of poor weather the ride may be cancelled, please check the Bike North website.
