RIDE NAME DISCIPLINE START TIME DISTANCE ROUTE FIELD SIZE PRICE

Description

The route comprehensively covers the extensive network of off-road shared user cycle paths in the Macquarie Park and Marsfield areas.

We start with some back roads to transit from Eastwood up hill to Marsfield while you are fresh to tackle the longest hills. We wait to regroup as necessary. Crossing Epping Road on the overbridge near Vimiera Road we continue until we join the cycle path system at Waterloo Park. From there ride almost continuously on shared user paths through the Macquarie Park business area. After crossing Epping Road another three times at grade, another bridge and then a tunnel, we head southwards along the very pleasant Shrimptons Creek shared user path then past Ryde Hospital and back to Eastwood.

Some short on-road sections leads us to the Blaxland Road shared path and along to the historic stone house of Blaxland. We continue to ride around the edge of the escarpment to Denistone Lookout with a great view west to the Blue Mountains and south across to Sydney Olympic Park. We take the standard back street route to return to Eastwood Railway Station.

Although this is a relatively short ride, at 17km, there are a number of hilly sections requiring effort and so this ride, although shorter, is quite a bit harder than the easy rides starting from Meadowbank and staying on the flat. The group travels at a gentle pace and we stop to regroup often. There are no long hills but several short ones add a degree of interest to this ride and give you a chance to practice your climbing technique.

As this ride does not use any major roads it is suitable for those who are new to cycling with adequate fitness levels, or perhaps those just getting back to it after some time away. It is suitable for children 12 to 18 years old who are accompanied on the ride by an adult carer. Children under 12 must be on a tandem, tag-along, kids trailer or bike seat but not cycling independently.

Notes: The route of the ride is to check out some of the proposed future linear parks in Ryde Councils Green Links Master plan which is currently open for community comments - participants can fill in a survey about the Green Links idea at the coffee stop at the end of the ride.
